WE've had this oven/microwave for 4 months now and absolutely love it. We got it so that we could have a second oven without doing a major renovation. So far it's worked well as a microwave and great as an oven. I'll assess them seperatly.
--AS a microwave, it's a little slower cooking than others we have had, but heats evenly, has a turntable, and rack. We really love the dial control...kind of like an ipod, simple and efficient.

--As an 2nd oven it is perfect for us and we actually use it frequently as the primary oven because 1) It heats up faster and cooks faster 2) It is more energy efficient with a smaller space to heat adn 3) it vents outside so it doesn't heat up the house in the summer at all.

As for the price, it is expensive, but was a much cheaper way to get a second oven for us and we are very happy with it.

We bought this w/ other GE Profile products (Dishwasher & Refrigerator) from PC Richards and I'm very glad we did.
We just did a full renovation and my contrator said this installed very easily and the venting was a breeze; straight up and then over 8 Ft.
It's constantly in use w/ two kids around. The dial knob makes it very easy to pick a cook time and temperature. Just turn and press. Convection bake works great for the hamburgers and meatloafs we usually have and it beats heating up the kitchen w/ the stove.
The micro-express button works in 30 second increments and if you need more time you just keep pressing it or spin the dial.
The popcorn preset button is a little short to pop them all but definitely not a deal breaker.
I would certainly recommend this product.
user comment GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave Oven Stainless Steel It's easy to change the light bulb yourself!

Review Date: September 2, 2010
Reviewer: Thomas R. Kueny, Milwaukee, WI USA

After reading the mixed reviews for this oven, the only unfavorable ones complained that if the oven light needed to be replaced, the unit had to be taken down from the wall. Well we purchased one anyway because to save $175 or more, I would have no problem taking it down myself to change the light bulb; it's not that hard.
We installed it, and wouldn't you know it, ...it stopped working after one successful test. We phoned the GE appliance department, also easy to do on-line, and they were here the next morning.
The repairman opened the oven by removing the grill from across the top. Two half-inch screws hold it in place from the top edge. He was then able to open the front control panel so he could adjust a misaligned door switch. He did not have to take the oven down from the cabinet.

Here is the revelation: the halogen light-bulb, in question, is located behind the grill right beneath the opening where the charcoal filter would be mounted, if you used one. Anyone with a Philips screwdriver can take these two screws out and save himself or herself a $175 service call.
The repairman suggested that we leave the screws out to make it easier next time. The grill fits snuggly without the screws.
When our new kitchen is finished, we will give it a hard test, like cooking with the microwave and the convection oven combined. For now, we are giving it five stars because it appears that this is an excellent product and the repair service is terrific.
This review will be revised if any of this proves to be untrue later in time.

The features on the microwave are great. However, after 2.5 years the Magnetron (which actually warms the food became damaged). Spent about $250 on labor to repair it (part comes w/ 5 yr warranty). However, 2yrs later the magnetron blew out again. Spent $100 for tech guy to come out, and it would be another ~ $250, at which point it didn't make sense and figured I'd just buy a new one. Also, my cleaning person broke the turntable and it's $110 to replace!!! However, the features on this microwave are great, and now that I'm shopping for a new one, I'm hoping to find one w/ similar options, like the night lite, reminder beep when food is done, add 30 secs option during cook time. The popcorn preset button gives me perfect popcorn everytime! If you get a GE, do yourself a favor and get the extended warranty.

I have owned two of these. The first one, worked fine. The microwave was good and I really loved the convection oven for small item cooking. The inside light did burn out and I think you have to take it to a repair shop to get it replaced, I'm not sure, I never got it fixed because I could never locate it. I moved and bought another one and within 2 months the main board went completely bad. It is a $200 repair and as I read reviews on the internet, this is not that uncommon. For the price, I would look for a different brand with better reviews and price.
user comment GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave Oven Stainless Steel GE REALLY let us down

We waited a long time before spending $600+ on a microwave. In Feb of 2009, we bought this oven. Initially after buying it we were ecstatic. We really liked the convection function in particular. However, immediately at the expiration of the warranty (12 months), the convection function quit working. We had used the convection function less than 20 times. Now we're left with a simple microwave that we paid $600 for. Given the high cost of repair, getting this unit fixed is not an option.

I realize that sometimes things do stop working at no fault of the manufacturer. But this was not a cheap oven, and GE is not an off-brand. The warranty should be longer (even it's just a parts warranty), and customers should be able to expect more than 1 year of reliable service from a major appliance produced by a major brand.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend GE convection/microwave ovens. The warranty is not long enough to protect your $600+ investment. Find yourself a manufacturer who offers a better warranty or buy separate microwave and convection appliances. Don't waste your money on these GE units.

We bought this convection microvave aproximately 18 months ago, electrical is poor on it , within 6months of purchase replaced lite above stove, after 18 months the interior light went out,$85.00 for bulb and over $200.00 service call. The oven has to be removed from the wall according to teir web site.I'd say that's a bit expensive minimum $285.00 to but a light bulb in. The Microwave cost us $600.00.We bought this one because we have always bought GE Profile Kitchen appliances. This definitely determine future appliance purchases.Model # JVM1790 Convection /Microwave.
user comment GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave Oven Stainless Steel Terrible design, not able to change the lightbulb inside

Review Date: December 10, 2009
Reviewer: B. Short, USA
Overall, the microwave works fine like any micro should, no real complaints there. However, we have had this micro for a little over a year. The inside light burned out as well as the task light that lights up the stovetop below. I searched for the replacement lightbulbs locally at home depot, and several other stores, no luck. I searched online, found the correct lightbulbs. Ordered 4 lights, 2 spare for when they burn out again. I went to install them. The bottom task light was a breeze, done in a few minutes. I opened the inside of the micro and could not find anywhere to access the light, nor could I see where it was even at?

Now reading the reviews here, that you need to remove the entire micro from the wall, have a technician install a lightbulb? to the tune of $200? That is insane! What an incredibly terrible design!! Geez, the inside light is not that big of a deal, I for sure am not going through the work of taking it down and paying a technician to install a freaking lightbulb. What was GE thinking when they came up with this LAME design?

I have to give this 1 star.
user comment GE Profile Spacemaker Series : JVM1790SK 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave Oven Stainless Steel Died after 3 yr

Review Date: June 24, 2010
Reviewer: Allen, boston
I had the GE profile for 3 yr and now it sleeps with the fishes. In the three years it performed well. Three years is a ridiculously short life for a microwave. I have owned a few microwaves and this is the first time I have every had one actually die. The microwave produced a burning rubber smell and got really hot inside. I was told it was likely the magnetron and it would be cheaper to replace it. I went to Sears and asked about microwaves, the salesperson said I would recommend any of these except the GE products they have a lot of problems(samsung got the best rating from him). I said, "I know". I bought a whirlpool. This thing is too expensive to die after 3 yr. I would expect it if I paid 150 bucks.

Microhood Microwave Oven ReviewsWhat is a Microhood?

A microhood is a small ventilation system attached to the microwave that allows hot air to escape, usually outside the home. Microhoods are placed atop over-the-range microwave ovens, so that hot air, steam, and smoke from the oven below can disperse, rather than remaining in the kitchen.

It is very common for over-the-range microwaves to have microhoods, though not compulsory. The thinking is that if you have a microwave above your range (which is common), you cannot have a dedicated ventilation system there as well, so the microhood helps to alleviate the heat and smoke.

The microhood has one or more fans inside that pull the air through and away from your kitchen. Be sure to check the product specifications to see:

  1. How many fans the hood has, and
  2. How fast the fans spin.

Faster fans will be more effective at eliminating exhaust. Some ovens also have multiple speed settings, allowing you to adjust to the current needs. This way you don’t need to keep a powerful fan on, which may be noisy and require more energy, if you are only producing a small amount of smoke or steam.

Countertop Microwave ReviewsCountertop Microwaves are the most common type of kitchen appliance. As the name suggests, they generally sit on the kitchen counter, though they can be placed anywhere that is flat and stable.

The term ‘Countertop’ refers simply to the placement and structure of the microwave; this is in contrast to Over-the-Range microwaves, which are placed within the cupboards, above the oven range. As such, countertop microwaves can include convection, microhoods, or any other feature you may find in a microwave.

The advantage to a countertop set-up is that its placement is flexible. You can move it anywhere you want, thus freeing up space for other appliances and cooking. Generally, countertop microwaves are cheaper than over-the-range machines, because they require no extra structural parts, simply four padded feet to hold them up.

Compact Microwave OvenCompact microwaves are perfect for any kitchen, no matter its size. They are generally countertop units that can be placed on any stable, flat surface. Have a little extra room on top of the fridge or in the corner of your counter? Drop a compact machine anywhere you want.

Advantages of a Compact Microwaves

The main advantage is visible right in the name: it’s a small piece of equipment. If you find yourself running low on counter space in your kitchen, a small microwave is a great way to maximize your available space. Plus, they tend to be lighter than full-size microwaves, so they can be easily moved around, whether you’re completely re-arranging your kitchen or simply want to get it out of the way.

Additionally, compact microwaves are generally the cheapest kind, due to their size. True, you can still get a wide range of options on a compact model, but smaller generally means cheaper, so this is great for people on a budget, especially singles or college students.

Drawbacks

That said, if you’re going to be cooking larger meals, you may find that some dishes simply don’t fit into a compact model. Plan on cooking for a family of four? You’re probably better off sticking with a full size or over-the-range oven.

Still not Sure?

See what other customers have had to say about compact microwave ovens.

Convection Oven Microwave

A convection oven microwave combines traditional microwave technology with convection to heat meals incredibly quickly and evenly. Whereas a traditional meal might leave the inside of something cold or not completely cooked, convection will ensure that the food is cooked thoroughly inside and out.

What is Convection?

A convection oven works by using a fan to circulate hot air around an enclosed space. This high-speed fan moves the heat equally around the oven, thus providing equal heat to everything you’re cooking.

Why Use a Convection Microwave?

Microwaves are known to cook fast, but with the additional power of convection, entire meals can be cooked at astonishing speeds. Additionally, it can bake, cook, reheat, broil, or brown any meal, as opposed to the traditional ‘heat’ setting that microwaves come with.

Convection microwave ovens produce foods with brown outsides and moist, fully-cooked interiors. They also have a fast-baking feature that uses both microwave and convection at the same time to cook completely and quickly. Generally, cooking speeds are reduced 20% when convection is added.

Because convection ovens cook so fast, you can cook with less oil, which makes your meals healthier. And they cook at lower temperatures, so you won’t burn away all the food’s nutrients and minerals.

This also keeps the heat down in the kitchen, which is great, because a lot of cooking can raise temperatures 15 or 20 degrees.

Finally, convection ovens use considerably less energy than traditional microwaves, saving on energy bills and helping the environment.
